This page is dedicated to good friends that
were on Dog Flight at Wakkanai in the
early 60's and are no longer with us.

Hugh Sherburn was a 202, and I was also stationed with him again when I got to Misawa in 1964.

Dan Murphy was a 292 that came to Wakkanai from the 6913th.  Dan's & Red Hensley's stories of Germany and Copenhagen inspired a lot of us to go to Bremerhaven.  I unfortunately didn't make it, but several others did.  Charlie Compton was one that did.

I found out in 1999 from Dave Mrha that Hugh Sherburn (Surefire) had been killed during the Viet Nam War when the EC-47 that he was a crew
member of went down in Laos in 1969.

I got the electronic rubbing from the Viet Nam Memorial Website.  I have also visted the Viet Nam Memorial at the State Capitol grounds at Olympia, Wa. and found Hugh's name and placed a small flag next to it.

These were really great guys and are missed.

I received an e-mail from Gordon Kelley on 01 March 2003
informing me of the passing of Charlie Compton on 26 Feb 2003.
Charlie was a 203 on Dog Flight at Wakkanai during the early
1960's and did a tour at the 6913th RSM Bremerhaven, Germany.
After his discharge he worked for NSA, and retired in 1996.
I had been in touch with Charlie and we had exchanged a few e-mail's
the last couple of years. Charlie was 61 years old.

Subject: Good Bye Dick Baker

Frank, it is with a very heavy heart that I forward the news that fellow Wakkanai flight commander Dick Baker passed away Saturday night, May 8.

Dick and I were there 1959-1960 and had been out of touch for many years but had heavy email correspondence the past 3 years.

I am sure many will remember Dick with fondness as being one of the most amiable and happy of men.  Please post this sad news to your outstanding site.

I received the following email from Frank Beckmann 09 May 2004
I have many good memories of Dick Baker as I am sure all of you who knew him or worked for him do.   He will be missed.

I wanted to inform everyone that CMSGT (Ret) Jim Cook passed away in Ocotber, 2006 in Hawaii. He lost his 5 year battle with Prostrate Cancer. Jim served 2 tours at Wakkanai and would have spent his whole career there if he had been able to. He married a gal from there and had 2 sons and a granddaughter. Jim was one of the best guys I met in the Air Force and was a Super Elinter. I believed he had submitted some of his photos to the web site. He was laid to rest in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Hawaii. God Speed Jim, you will be missed!
